When handling blood, the use of gloves and a face shield is crucial for a Patient Care Technician (PCT). Gloves provide a barrier between the technician's skin and the blood, reducing the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens or infectious materials. They are essential for protecting the hands while performing tasks that may involve contact with blood.

A face shield complements the gloves by protecting the PCT’s face, especially the eyes, nose, and mouth, from potential splashes or sprays of blood. This is particularly important since blood can carry infectious agents that could enter the body through mucous membranes. Using both gloves and a face shield together offers comprehensive protection against accidental exposure.

In contrast, relying solely on a lab coat or a face mask would not provide adequate protection. A lab coat does not protect the hands from direct contact, and a face mask alone does not shield the face or eyes from blood. While goggles offer eye protection, they do not cover the mouth and nose. Therefore, the combination of gloves and a face shield is the best practice for ensuring safety when dealing with blood in a healthcare setting.
